Digit + Stas Spoke To Us About Her Debut EP, The Perils Of SoundCloud, And Moving Halfway Across The World

Digit+Stas has just released her new EP, and it’s called Violet. As this interview shows, she’s not one to waste words…

Band names and pseudonyms can be tricky to think up. What’s the story behind ‘Digit + Stas’?

‘Digit is short for Digital. Since most of the music is orchestrated digitally, it’s typically me just and the digits within the software. Stas is short for Nastasia – it’s my name, and it means resurrection.

Are there any themes running through your Violet EP?

‘Definitely. Most of my music is about regulating a variant of ethics – at least the human portion of it. That was my favourite thing about grunge. Additionally, the importance of seizing one’s self, and not being a stick in the mud. Going into auto-pilot makes it really easy to be taken advantage of, not to mention letting those near you be taken advantage of.

Who are your main musical inspirations?

‘The question is very broad. I suppose that aspects of inspiration for anything can always be found in one’s family. My gratitude to my mother for bringing me halfway across the globe to be somewhere where there are opportunities is a big one. There are people all over the world that are born in places where opportunity may be less likely. Let alone provide safety.

Can you talk us through your songwriting process?

‘My mother is a Film Professor, so I suppose I tend to look at songs as accessories to storytelling. Storytelling on its own is very important to me because it can make the difference between someone knowing what to do in a sticky situation and not.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

‘Eddie Vedder.

What advice do you have for any new musicians looking to make their first EP?

‘To not be offset by the immediate response they are able (or not able) to get via the Internet. Musicians didn’t always have Soundcloud.

What’s been the highlight of your career so far?

‘I don’t understand the question. Is this the part where I name-drop or say shiny things?
