GIG REVIEW: Sunset Sons + Louis Berry’s UK tour was, predictably, brilliant

The anthemic indie-rockers are on the form of their lives

It’s really, really hard not to enjoy a Sunset Sons show. We’ve seen them a few times over the past year and they’ve always been on top form, so we were pretty thrilled when they announced that they were going to be spending most of March and April embarking on their biggest-ever headline tour, and that they’d be bringing superstar support act Louis Berry along for the ride. We went down to the band’s show at the Phoenix in Exeter, and it’s fair to say that we were impressed:

They’ve got the tunes, and they know how to play them live

The band’s debut album ‘Very Rarely Say Die‘ only came out two days ago, and yet the entire crowd already seemed to know every word of every song. Their support act very nearly stole the show

Have you heard of Louis Berry? The Liverpool-born troubadour is making a name for himself with his own brand of modernised sixties rock-and-roll, and he happens to be a very good live act. Sunset Sons know how to get the crowd going

Frontman Rory Williams is a bearded bundle of charisma, guitarist Rob Windram is a packet of rock-tinted fire, and the rhythym section of Pete Harper and Jed Laidlaw is as tight as any combo we’ve seen live. Of the four, though, it’s Rory who shines; his gravelly voice somehow sounds even better live than it does on the record, and his stage presence is enough to ensure that the eyes of the audience are never far from him throughout the gig.

If in doubt, check them out – you seriously won’t regret it.
