One on One with // Eric Benet

You’ve just released your single Runnin’ (The Afropeans Revisit) – can you describe it for us?

I love this song. Runnin’ is about a young man who’s running from love and looking for love in all the wrong places. He eventually finds love, matures, and then he just can’t wait to run home to be with the one he loves.

Was it easy to write and record?

Easy is a relative term… I’d say it was easier to record once the writing was done. The writing comes as it comes; I never try to force it, so in that way it’s easy.

What’s your favourite song from your last album?

I don’t think I can pick one! It depends on the day you ask me. Right now I’m loving Lay It Down (The Afropeans Revisit), which is also the next single to be taken from my new album, The Other One.

You’ve been playing a lot of live shows recently – what’s the best thing about playing live?

I love being able to interact with the fans – it’s really the best part for me. Seeing faces and smiles, and watching people have a good time.

You’re heading over to Japan in May for a run of live dates – are you excited?

I’m very excited about the Japan shows! I have very loyal fans there and I can’t wait to get back to them and give them a great show.

What’s your favourite track to play live?

That’s another tough question. I love Sometimes I Cry, Georgy Porgy, Spend My Life… It’s hard to just pick one.

Who are your main musical influences?

I listen to everything. I love Stevie Wonder, Hall & Oates, Paul Williams, Joni Mitchel, Al Green… There are so many greats.

How would you describe your music for people who don’t know you?

Soulful R&B, but my album The Other One has a European spin on it.

What made you want to start making music in the first place?

I think I was just born with music in my heart. I had to let it out.

Who’s your ultimate musical icon and how have they influenced you?

I’d have to give this more thought, as there are so many legends that have inspired me. I suppose I’d have to go with all of those that I mentioned above. They’re just sharing their gifts.

Which song do you wish you’d written?

The one I’m about to write next!

What do you hope to do by the end of the year?

My wife and I are expecting a baby this summer, so I’m looking forward to family time. I’ll be working hard on the projects signed to my label Jordan House – Calvin Richardson and Goapele.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened you through music – it could be on tour, in the studio, anything!

I’ve been blessed with so many great experiences, so nothing weird is jumping out at me….. Let’s see… Just recently on tour I tossed my hat into the air inside the venue and it landed on a ledge about twenty feet up. I requested a ladder and climbed up to get it. My manager was so worried I’d fall! It was pretty dramatic, but it was fine. I got my hat and went on to the stage for a great show!
