Your new EP is out on September 17th – are you proud of it?

It’s by far my best work! I think that this EP displays my progression extremely well and I can’t wait for the public to hear it in full!

What’s your favourite track on the EP and why?

I’d say the fourth track: Spirit. I had a lot of fun experimenting with my vocals and a few extra instruments when recording it and the song utilizes a lot of new techniques that I found really fulfilling! Plus, it’s always fun to play live.

How would you describe your music for people who don’t know you?

Describing music is always difficult and I wouldn’t say I fit in to a ‘box’ as such, but it’s definitely Acoustic with a modern folk influence, utilizing ambience and experimental techniques.

Which song do you wish you had written?

The Sound of Silence by Paul Simon. I saw this performed live in Hyde Park and it was completely captivating!

Who’s your ultimate icon and how have they influenced you?

I wouldn’t say I have a single ‘icon’ as such, I’m trying to create my own unique sound.. Saying that, I love to listen to great guitarists and musicians who really push the boundaries of their instrument! I like to listen to a fair bit of foreignmusic too, and this opens my ears to new rythmys and melodies.

You’re touring later this year – you looking forward to it?

I can’t wait – this will be my third full UK tour since August last year and I’m excited to be returning to places I have visited before, as well as heading to some new places! The full list of dates is available here: www.facebook.com/marknicholsmusic,

What made you get into music?

I started at a relatively late age and it was through the influence and tuition of some friends of mine in Cape Town that I began my career as a bassist. As I got older I progressed onto guitar and have never looked back.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you through music – it could be on tour, in the studio, anything!

I played a gig on a moving barge recently, that was pretty weird! A friend of mine went to Latitude festival this year and met a few new people, he told me they were exchanging upcoming artists to check out and they suggested me to him! That was pretty exciting!

Describe yourself in three words?

Committed, Excited and Passionate!
